In Australia, lightning is one of the most dangerous and frequently encountered weather hazards. And whilst it’s certainly fascinating to watch, lightning can be extremely underrated – resulting in over one hundred severe injuries to people every year.
It’s estimated that 2,000 thunderstorms occur globally at any one time each year, producing up to 100 lightning strikes per second. During these thunderstorms every flash of ‘cloud to ground’ lightning is potentially lethal carrying up to 100,000 volts or more. Even up to 80 kilometres from the point of impact it can spark significant damage. Contrary to popular belief, lightning doesn’t always strike tall objects – it can strike anywhere and repeatedly.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, lightning strikes can cost more than $1 billion in insured losses from damage to expensive electronic equipment and structural fires with the potential to destroy entire homes and commercial properties.
You can’t stop lightning – but you can prevent its destructive effects. West Australian Power Protection (WAPP) is able to offer a complete solution for lightning protection systems design and installation complying with AS/NZS1768.
